Traffic lights and pedestrian crossing beacons

Details of who maintains traffic and crossing lights and how to report faults.

1 Permanent traffic lights

There are roughly 450 sets of permanent traffic lights at crossings and junctions in West Sussex.

Maintenance

We:

  • inspect traffic lights once a year for routine repairs and maintenance
  • routinely replace non-LED lamps once a year to reduce the number of faults due to lamp failure
  • monitor our signalled junctions to ensure they are running effectively as specified and to rectify any faults.

Faults

Report faulty traffic lights to our contractor Telent. The exception is where the traffic lights are on the following trunk roads - A27, A23 and M23. These should be reported to National Highways.

Telent will respond to 'Critical' faults (those that could pose a road safety risk) within 2 hours, and to other faults within 24 hours.

A27, A23 and M23 traffic lights

National Highways is responsible for traffic lights on the trunk roads - A27, A23 and M23.
