Year group age ranges

A school year runs from 1 September to 31 August the following year.

Age ranges Year group
Turning 5 years old in that school year Reception
Turning 6 years old in that school year Year 1
Turning 7 years old in that school year Year 2
Turning 8 years old in that school year Year 3
Turning 9 years old in that school year Year 4
Turning 10 years old in that school year Year 5
Turning 11 years old in that school year Year 6
Turning 12 years old in that school year Year 7
Turning 13 years old in that school year Year 8
Turning 14 years old in that school year Year 9
Turning 15 years old in that school year Year 10
Turning 16 years old in that school year Year 11
Turning 17 years old in that school year Year 12
Turning 18 years old in that school year Year 13

Key stage age ranges

The national curriculum must be taught in schools maintained by the local authority to pupils of statutory school age (5-16 years). There are five key stages, depending on the child’s age.

Age Key stage
4-5 years old 0 or Foundation stage
6-7 years old 1
8-11 years old 2
12-14 years old 3
15-16 years old 4
16-18 years old 5
