Map information

There are 3 layers of information available in this map.

Casualties

The casualties layer will be turned off when you first view the page. This layer displays the people who were injured in a collision event. The symbols for multiple casualties in a single collision will be stacked on each other, so only one will be displayed. Turning different casualties off and on will help to show different casualties involved.

Vehicles

The vehicle layer will be turned off when you first view the page. This layer displays the vehicles involved in a collision event, but not all the vehicles involved need to have hit or been hit by an object. Vehicles have been grouped for display and can be turned on or off by clicking the 'eye' icon to the left of the legend symbol.

The symbols for multiple vehicles in one collision will be stacked on each other, so only one can be seen in the display. Turning different vehicles on or off will help to show different vehicles involved. Personal powered transporters (PPT) are vehicles such as e-scooters, powered skateboards, or powered self-balancing devices.

Collisions

These will be turned on when you first view the page. Five years of collision data is shown, displaying fatal, serious and slight collisions. Each of these categories can be turned on or off by clicking the 'eye' icon to the left of the legend symbol.

Additional map information

You can get additional information about the layers by clicking on a symbol in the map. A window will appear showing information for any layer(s) selected.

Where there is more than one piece of information, a number such as '(1 of 3)' for example, will be displayed in the top left-hand corner of the information window. You can then click on the arrow in the top-right corner to scroll through the number of windows available.

To the right of the 'key' symbol, there is a 'find In layer' symbol. This allows you to search by 'fields' but has limited benefits. To use it, click on the name of the field you want to search by.

For example, select the word 'collisions' in the legend pane, so that it is highlighted in yellow. Then click the 'find In layer' symbol to open a search window. In the 'date' box, you can type a date such as '30/06/2025' and then the 'find' button to show the number that occurred on that date.

If you require help with the map, email roadsafety@westsussex.gov.uk. A response may take a few working days.
