Requesting a school place

What to do if you want your child to attend school.

Home education does not have to be permanent. If you decide your child should start, or go back to, learning at school, you can apply for a place. How you apply depends on your circumstances.

To find out what year group your child would be in, use our school age ranges and year groups page.

You can apply for a place in any year group, at any time using our moving school page.

If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), see our SEND school places page.

Applying to start during key school transitions

Some parents want their child to start school when other children are moving on, for example from infant to junior, or primary to secondary schools. To do this, you need to apply before certain deadlines. Find out more on our pages for:

Helping your child move from home education to school

To support your child with the change from home education to school, see our moving into school or college after home education page.
