Local highway maintenance transparency report

This report explains the work West Sussex County Council does as the highway authority to manage and maintain roads across the county.

West Sussex has a large and complex road network. Keeping it running smoothly so that residents and businesses can travel without disruption is a big challenge, especially with limited budgets and resources.

Council staff work hard to keep roads safe, reliable and cost-effective. They follow both local priorities and national standards to guide their work.

Like many areas in the UK, West Sussex faces ongoing challenges with road maintenance. Despite this, the report shows that the council is performing well and meeting expectations set out in the Council Plan and national best practices.

Within the report, you will find information about:

  • the highway network
  • spending on maintenance (2025 to 2026)
  • works planned for 2025 to 2026
  • potholes
  • road conditions
  • plans and strategies
  • procurement improvements
  • climate change and resilience
