Adur Growth Deal

This programme of regeneration projects funded by partners will unlock opportunities for new homes and employment in Adur.

1 Overview

Adur has a strong future for growth. It has a steady local economy, good transport links, and important places like Shoreham Port and Brighton City Airport. Building projects at Shoreham Harbour and New Monks Farm in Lancing are creating new homes, bringing in businesses, and providing good quality jobs for the future.

Adur’s economy is growing because it supports local businesses and creates jobs for people in the area. These jobs help communities stay strong and do well. People in Adur’s towns and villages have a strong sense of community. Councils, businesses and local people work together to improve living standards and make sure everyone benefits.

This updated Adur Growth Deal sets out a shared plan for steady and balanced growth. It focuses not just on jobs and investment, but also on the environment that supports them. This includes improving town centres, creating green spaces for sport and leisure and making it easier for people to walk and cycle between places. By working together, Adur can reach its full potential and improve life for both residents and visitors.

2 Background

The combined Adur and Worthing Growth Deal first started in March 2017. It was a 5-year plan of regeneration to improve the area and focus on key local priorities.

West Sussex County Council and Adur District Council have now updated the Adur Growth Deal. We want to keep attracting investment, use their resources wisely and support the local economy. Over the next 5 years, we plan to build new homes, create jobs, improve community spaces and upgrade local infrastructure.

So far, the Growth Deal has achieved:

  • securing funding from the government, grants and developers to improve important infrastructure
  • helping to redevelop brownfield land at Shoreham’s Western Harbour Arm, creating over 1,000 new homes and job spaces
  • working with national partners to provide improvements including:
    • flood protection, drainage and transport
    • a new A27 junction at New Monks Farm
  • supporting new homes at New Monks Country Park and creating working spaces near Brighton City Airport
  • investment in walking, cycling and other green travel options to better connect Lancing, Shoreham and nearby areas
  • improving town centres and community spaces, including turning Southwick Square into a more welcoming place for markets, events and local businesses

The Adur Growth Programme is a partnership between West Sussex County Council and Adur District Council. They work together to grow the local economy and support long-term growth in a way that lasts.

The first 5-year plan has finished so the new plan looks at what worked well, makes improvements and sets new goals for the future.

3 Priorities

The new Adur deal focuses on:

  • building more homes and create jobs by investing in the right roads, services, and facilities
  • improving old and unused land, especially near the river and coast, to support the local economy in the future
  • protecting people, businesses and transport from flooding and help the area deal with climate change
  • making town centres and local areas better places to visit by improving public spaces and focusing on community needs
  • making it easier for people to walk, cycle and use public transport, so they have better ways to get around
  • supporting all people by providing the right types of homes and a wide range of job opportunities
  • working closely with national organisations, landowners and partners to bring in funding and achieve the best results

Shoreham flood defences

This project will improve the flood barriers along the slipway. It will help protect Shoreham town centre, homes and businesses from flooding. It will also protect the A259 road.

In the future, the area could include a cycle path to help people travel more easily. Find out more about Shoreham flood defences.

Southwick FC sports hub and community hub

This project will improve the sports hub with new, modern facilities and a café. Funding will help create a place where people can exercise, support a local business and stay healthy. Find out more about Southwick FC sports hub and community hub.

Lancing village public space improvements

This project will make Lancing village a better place to visit and live in. It will add small green spaces (pocket parks) at North Street and North Farm Road.

Plans also include slowing traffic, improving walking and cycling routes and adding better lighting, seating and signs. These changes will make the village safer and more welcoming and help local businesses. Find out more about Lancing village public space improvements.

Buckingham Park sports pavilion and café, Shoreham

This project will rebuild the pavilion at Buckingham Park. It will include a café with indoor and outdoor seating, modern toilets and better changing rooms for sports. The new building will make the park easier and more enjoyable for everyone to use. Find out more about Buckingham Park sports pavilion and café.

Supported living homes, Pond Road, Shoreham

This project will build homes for adults who need extra care and support on the old Burrscrofte site. Specialists will design and build the homes. The next stage will look at how to improve the rest of the site with help from NHS partners.

Lancing to Sompting cycleway (east to west)

This project will create a safe route for walking and cycling between New Monks Farm, Lancing and Sompting. It will help people travel in a healthy and eco-friendly way. Find out more about Lancing to Sompting cycleway.

Shoreham A259 cycleway scheme

This project will build a new cycle path along the A259. It will make cycling safer and connect Shoreham town centre, Shoreham Harbour and areas towards Hove. Find out more about Shoreham A259 cycleway scheme.
