Notes on attendance figures

Group leaders are advised of councillor attendance figures annually so that they can take any action they consider necessary to address poor attendance. However, the modern councillor role is not primarily to attend meetings. Many councillors have other commitments on their time which are difficult to record and are not reflected in these figures. These could include:

  • membership of outside bodies, school governorship and constituency work
  • other responsibilities which are carried out outside of formal meetings.

Attendance figures can also be affected by other factors, such as long-term ill health or a clash of commitments.
