Supporting walking, wheeling and cycling to school is an important element of the West Sussex Active Travel Strategy 2024-2036. Our Active Travel to School Improvements Programme is delivering a range of new infrastructure improvements across the county and we’re developing a pipeline of schemes for future delivery.
School-related highway improvements, such as new or improved crossing points, footway widening and protective bollards, can also be requested by submitting a Community Highways Scheme application.
School Travel Plans can provide comprehensive evidence to support requests for highway improvements. All schools in West Sussex can develop a plan online for free by registering at Modeshift Stars, which provides a template and guidance.
Faults with street lights and School Safety Zone ‘wig-wag’ signs can be reported via the Enerveo website. Problems with road markings and signs and other highway maintenance issues can be reported direct us.
If you would like to request a School Crossing Patrol for your school, or would like further information and advice, you can find out more on our School crossing patrols page.
Enforcement
Parking around schools is a frequent issue. Civil parking enforcement is managed at a local level. Visit your local district or borough council's parking pages for contact details for your area.
You can request additional enforcement visits if you have existing markings covered by a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). Schools and communities can also request a change or new Traffic Regulation Order.
