Operation Watershed

How we have invested in highway drainage and environmental improvements in areas worst affected by flooding.

1 Overview

In 2013, £1.25m was used to set up the Operation Watershed Active Communities Fund, which encouraged communities to act against flooding.

The Fund was so successful in supporting local communities, working with the County Council to become more prepared for floods, that we approved further funding of £1.1m toward Active Communities projects in 2014/15 and a further £500,000 was granted in 2016/17.

Active Communities Fund 2017

Operation Watershed now has a further £500,000 available in 2017/18 for community groups interested in helping their community prepare for, and reduce the risk and impacts of, flooding.

Community groups, volunteer groups and town and parish councils within West Sussex can apply for funding for projects they can deliver for themselves. The criteria we use to assess applications to the fund are:

  • how it addresses recognised flood issues
  • if it has strong community support
  • that it demonstrates value for money
  • how it will realise benefits to your community.

All applications need support from your local, elected county councillor. We particularly want to encourage communities to come together and develop the network of local action groups.

Help, guidance and how to apply

The Active Communities Fund is open to applications from properly constituted groups, such as flood action groups, residents' associations, parish councils or other established community groups.

If you would like to discuss your proposals or initiatives before applying, please contact us using the email address below.

Applications will need to achieve a score of 65 or higher to be considered and should be submitted with any supporting documents to the Operation Watershed team.
