Adults’ social care casual bank

Find out more about casual bank work in adults’ social care.

“Anyone looking at a different way of flexible working - one which enables them to match their skills, knowledge and experiences to various social work roles and have more control over their work/life balance, then I would strongly encourage them to consider the casual social work route at West Sussex County Council (WSCC).”

Krish Ramdhony
Casual Senior Social Worker

Our adult casual bank team consists of roles for:

  • assistant care managers
  • newly qualified social workers
  • social workers
  • senior social workers
  • advanced social work practitioners
  • occupational therapists.

These roles work alongside various teams in adults' social services across West Sussex supporting with tasks such as:

  • hospital discharge assessments and reviews
  • Care Act assessments and reassessments
  • Care Act reviews in the community and hospitals
  • duty work
  • Mental Capacity Act assessments
  • best interest assessments and reviews
  • direct payments reviews
  • safeguarding work
  • mental health assessments
  • court duties
  • occupational therapy work.

Our adults' service bank workers often choose to provide a regular availability in accordance with the service requirements. Once a casual worker has expressed an interest in a piece of work, they will liaise with managers around the hours and length of time involved in the piece of work.

On occasion, once work has started within a team our workers have decided to continue to offer their service with that team, providing continuity and a ‘familiar face’. Many casual opportunities have led to being offered fixed term or permanent contracts.

Casual bank staff have the opportunity to work across various teams on different shorter pieces of work to explore new skills and build on current experiences. Some assignments may have elements of working from home alongside face-to-face client tasks. The variety of work means that our team are motivated with new challenges whilst gaining experience is their chosen field.

“Working on the casual bank has been perfect to help me get back into the sector. The variety of different teams to work in has meant I have been able to refresh my old skills and learn new ones, supported by excellent training, colleagues and managers.”
