What animals eat impacts upon the composition and quality of products that people consume, such as milk, meat and eggs. Human health can be put at risk through bacteria, additives and chemicals if standards are not complied with. It is therefore important that animal feed is properly regulated.
How is animal feed controlled?
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has responsibility for improving safety throughout the food chain, including improving farm hygiene. It is responsible for rules on the formulation and marketing of animal feed to ensure its safety.
West Sussex Trading Standards animal health officers monitor movement licensing, animal by-products and welfare issues, as well as the safe storage and mixing of animal feed. If your business carries out certain activities, you will need to register with or request approval from our Trading Standards team.
Which businesses are affected?
Before you register with Trading Standards, it is important to checkĀ the FSA website to find information on:
- businesses affected by animal feed legislation
- the relevant legislation
- activities not requiring registration and approval
- activities requiring Trading Standards registration
- activities requiring Trading Standards approval
- activities requiring veterinary medicines approval.
These activities are coded and you must understand the relevant activity codes before submitting our animal feed registration form.
