Improving mobile coverage in Chichester
The Chichester OpenDigital project is a partnership between West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council. It aims to provide the technology needed to improve mobile coverage in key areas of the city centre. Mobile network operators can then use this technology to improve their services.
The project responds to feedback about poor and unreliable mobile coverage in the city centre.
We are delivering the project alongside improvements to streets and public spaces to make the city centre more attractive and easier to use.
This includes:
- stronger, more reliable mobile coverage
- improved access to 4G and future 5G services
- infrastructure that can support new technologies as they develop
- planned works that help reduce disruption in the city centre
To support this work, we're installing discreet, multi-purpose street columns that can host telecommunications equipment.
How it will work
We are installing carefully designed street columns that can support mobile network equipment. They will connect to underground fibre networks to improve mobile coverage across the city centre.
Mobile network operators will use this technology to improve their services.
Improvements will focus on key city centre streets, including North Street, South Street, East Street and West Street.
The infrastructure has been designed to complement the historic character of the city centre.
