Census records

How to access both national and local census record data.

Census records 1921 to present

Census records from 1921 onward are held by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Public access to these census returns is restricted under the terms of the 100-year rule, whereby census results are closed to the public for 100 years to ensure individuals' privacy.

General data is released and below are links to the reports of the findings for West Sussex.

Census records 1841-1921

Censuses from 1841 to 1921 are available online from the UK Census Online, or from the West Sussex Records Office.
