The importance of pupil views

Specialist provision - South coast.

Objective

The school wanted to build on its existing therapeutic policy by introducing a whole-school approach that matched its values. They also aimed to create a clear framework for gathering and acting on pupil feedback.

Actions

Staff created debrief boards to support reflective and restorative conversations with pupils. These boards were adapted to suit individual needs.

Impact

  • Pupil voice is now a key part of how the school plans and delivers support.
  • Pupils have developed stronger emotional literacy and understand that reflection is part of learning.
  • Many pupils have started to problem-solve and find their own solutions.
  • The number of physical incidents has gone down, showing that the approach is working.

Next steps

The school will continue to embed the therapeutic approach as part of its development plan. They also plan to:

  • offer training for parents
  • expand the use of Therapeutic Thinking analysis tools
