Developing pupil wellbeing
Primary school - North of county.
Objective
The primary school wanted to support all pupils’ wellbeing, with a focus on building emotional literacy.
Actions
Therapeutic Thinking tutors attended a one-day training session on the Principles of Emotional Literacy.
After the training, the tutors led sessions for the wider staff team. They focused on helping staff make emotional vocabulary a key part of everyday practice. This included teaching pupils how to notice physical signs of emotions and understand how feelings, behaviours, and actions are connected.
Tutors also introduced a centrally displayed emotions word wall to help pupils build emotional vocabulary, support self-regulation, and encourage meaningful conversations and reflection.
The school created calm, low-arousal spaces that pupils could use whenever needed. They also made sure trained staff were available during playtimes in a dedicated Wellbeing Room.
Impact
Pupil wellbeing surveys showed that children felt happier and safer at school.
Next steps
Tutors plan to improve how they gather pupil feedback to make sure every child feels heard. Alongside the existing school council, they’re setting up a Junior Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to give pupils more voice in school life.
