Developing a therapeutic team
Specialist provision - South coast.
Objective
The Specialist provision school aimed to adopt a more therapeutic approach across the whole school, in line with their current values. They understood the need for shared understanding and collective responsibility.
Actions
After two staff members completed Therapeutic Thinking tutor training, they led training sessions for the whole school. These sessions took place during INSET days, in short bite-sized formats, and through regular refreshers to make sure everyone had the same understanding.
The school then expanded its team of trained tutors by sending more staff on the 3-day course. These staff members came from different roles within the school, bringing a range of perspectives to the approach.
Together, they formed a ‘therapeutic team’ to support other staff members.
Impact
The team worked together to share their knowledge and support their colleagues.
The training boosted staff confidence and helped them make thoughtful, therapeutic decisions.
Next steps
The school is continuing to embed the therapeutic approach as part of its development plan.
They’re making sure all staff stay up to date through ongoing professional development, and tutors regularly attend refresher training.
