Short breaks for disabled children

Fun, leisure and social activities for disabled children and young people outside the school day.

Why use Short Breaks

Short Breaks services enable a child to try new experiences, both with and away from their siblings and parents or carers, giving them the opportunity to learn new skills, develop their confidence and have fun! Parents and carers also get a break from their caring role (respite).

They are available for children and young people, from 0-18 years, who live in West Sussex and have a disability and/or additional need. Families who are in receipt of either the middle or high care component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payments (PIP) for their disabled child or young person qualify for services automatically.

For families of children and young people who have a similar level of need, but are not receiving DLA or PIP, Short Breaks providers offer a simple self-assessment to assess eligibility.

Information about all Short Breaks services can be found on the West Sussex Local Offer website.

The cost

Activities are provided at a charge similar to what a child or young person would be charged for a comparable activity. All additional costs, such as 1:1 support or equipment to do the activity are funded through the Short Breaks programme.

Parents or carers of disabled children and young people who need support from us may also qualify for direct payments to pay for assistance of their own choosing.

Additional information

The Family Support and Short Breaks service statement sets out some services offered by West Sussex County Council.

It tells you about what we can offer children and young people with additional needs and/or disabilities and how to access them.

The Short Breaks map browser enables you to view current suppliers throughout West Sussex.
