Sussex college students shine as they graduate from fire service course

Release date: 12 May 2026

Twelve young people have successfully graduated from the latest GRIT course run by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

A pass-out parade took place at Bognor Fire Station on Friday (8 May) with an audience of proud family and friends, and the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Mr Gary Shipton.

In the two weeks prior to the pass-out parade, the students from Ormiston Six Village Academy and Bourne Community College spent time with a team of instructors and simulated firefighting drills and activities to support their social and emotional development.

From running hoses on the drill yard to tackling teambuilding tasks, learning first aid, and building communication skills, the young people were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and support one another.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Andy Piller, attended the pass-out parade and presented the young people with their certificates. Speaking at the event, he said: “Having met all these young people, their politeness and dedication shone through when listening to them speak about their experiences on this GRIT course.

“The way in which they worked together and executed their drills perfectly shows me that we have 12 future firefighters in the running, and I hope to be meeting them again on a fire station when they turn 18 years old!”
