Following completion of works at Wivelsfiled Station, works will begin at the Civic Way roundabout on Monday 26 June and are expected to be completed in early September 2023. This section of the pedestrian and cycle improvements had originally been planned to take place earlier in the year, but it was considered that undertaking the works over the summer months/school holiday period would reduce their impact. This also allowed the improvements to be reviewed and traffic management requirements reduced to minimise the impact on the local highway.
The Burgess Hill Place and Connectivity Programme represents the continued delivery of pedestrian and cycle infrastructure improvements as part of the wider Mid Sussex Growth Programme. It is being delivered through a package of projects, aimed at creating safe, direct and attractive walking and cycling routes and high-quality public spaces to encourage people to choose to walk, cycle and use public transport. This aspect of the scheme will also provide safer crossing infrastructure across the roundabout to support vulnerable road users.
Cllr Joy Dennis, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “Together with Mid Sussex District Council we were able to secure funding for the Place and Connectivity Programme through the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) grant ringfenced for the delivery of sustainable transport and public realm improvements.
“It is important to note that these funds cannot be used to address the existing traffic issues experienced at the junction, but the £4.7m scheme is part of a wider £21m investment in sustainable transport infrastructure in Burgess Hill. The funding will continue be to boost the local economy, support new housing and tackle carbon and emissions.
"I’m pleased that we are now entering the final stages of this first phase of the Place and Connectivity Programme and our partnership with Mid Sussex District Council is beginning to deliver an ambitious range of sustainable transport improvements in Burgess Hill.”
The works in Burgess Hill support the Council’s Plan of sustainable growth by developing modern infrastructure and the underpinning theme of climate change.
