Release date: 5 October 2022

The High Street, and a section of the A281 London Road in Henfield, are about to get a new, smoother road surface, which will be more resilient to potholes.

Subject to unforeseen factors, such as severe weather, this essential work will take place between 17 and 21 October and hours of work will generally be between 8pm and 6am.

The High Street and London Road, from Golden Square to Furners Lane, will be closed to through traffic and vehicles diverted via a signed route during the resurfacing operations.

Access to homes, shops and businesses will be maintained. However, when works are being carried out in the immediate vicinity, delays may occur for operational and/or safety reasons. Side streets may also be affected.

Bus companies have been notified but minimal services operate in this area during the proposed working hours.

A West Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “These are essential works as the current surface is showing signs of significant weakening.

“There will be short-term disruption, for which we apologise, but the works will lead to long-term benefits: the durability of the road surface will be improved, making it more resilient to potholes, and the new surface will also be smoother, which will lessen road noise.

“We don’t decide to carry out night-time resurfacing lightly. We have considered the wider disruption to communities and road users that would be caused through daytime work on these roads.

“Every effort will be made to limit inconvenience as much as possible. For example, our contractor will try its best to carry out the noisiest operations in the earliest part of the evening and before 11pm.”
