Eleven students from Crawley College have successfully completed the latest IGNITE course run by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.
The course supports young people to improve their personal resilience, boost wellbeing, strengthen relationships, and build healthy communities.
During the course the pupils aged 16-18 took part in a diverse programme of firefighter simulated exercises and activities to support their social and emotional development and equip them with skills for life.
A special pass out parade was held to celebrate the students’ achievements on Friday (5 December) at Crawley Fire Station in front of their proud families and the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Dr Tim Fooks.
Station Manager James Mcgrath attended the event presented the young people with their certificates.
Speaking after the event, he said: “It was fantastic to meet our latest IGNITE students and watch them demonstrate their new skills.
“Over the course of the week they have taken part in drill yard skills such as running hoses, teambuilding challenges, first aid workshops, and communications activities.
“They have all worked really hard and should be proud of everything they have achieved.”
Councillor Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for Community Support, Fire & Rescue, said: “I would like to congratulate the young people who completed the IGNITE course. I hope it has provided them with a valuable insight into the fire and rescue service and may inspire them to consider a career within the fire and rescue service.”
