IGNITE students celebrate their success at Bognor Fire Station

Release date: 16 February 2026

Twelve young people have successfully completed the latest IGNITE course run by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

The course aims to promote personal resilience, improve wellbeing, strengthen relationships, and build healthy communities.

During the course, the pupils aged 16-19 from Chichester College took part in a diverse programme of firefighter simulated exercises and activities to support their social and emotional development.

This combination of drill yard skills such as running hoses, alongside teambuilding challenges, first aid training, and communication activities, helps to equip young people with lifelong skills and improve their confidence.

A special pass out parade was held to celebrate the students’ achievements on Friday (13 February) at Bognor Fire Station in front of their proud families.

Area Manager for Service Delivery, Ady Carter, attended the event and presented the young people with their certificates.

Speaking after the event, he said: “It was fantastic to meet our latest IGNITE students and watch them demonstrate their new skills.

“They have all worked really hard and should be proud of everything they have achieved.

“I hope this course has given them an insight into the fire and rescue service and may inspire them to consider this as a future career.”

Councillor Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for Community Support, Fire & Rescue, said: “I would like to congratulate the young people who completed the IGNITE course. These programmes delivered by our Targeted Education Team make a real difference in helping to build stronger, safer communities across West Sussex.”
