1 About unavailable routes

Sections of the West Sussex rights of way network sometimes become unavailable. Closures are usually temporary and are to protect your safety. On rare occasions paths may become subject to a permanent closure order.

The unavailable paths listed here are not available for use by the public and are without a locally signed alternative.

Please be aware that although these website pages are updated regularly, it is sometimes necessary to close a path as an emergency or for short periods of time. In such cases information may not be available on the website.

2 Temporary closures

Please see below a list of longer term temporary closures on our network. For enquiries about short term closures of up to 21 days, please contact the PRoW Team.

*Closure may be lifted sooner if works are completed ahead of schedule. An extension may also be required and we will state this from the outset if we are aware that it will be a longer closure.

Amberley

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 2667 (part) - Closed for a distance of approximately 75 metres from its junction with Church Street (TQ027132) heading westwards along FP2667 to Grid Reference TQ026132. Note: An alternative route has been provided around the closed section.
• Duration: Closed until 5 August 2026.
• Reason: To protect public safety while a collapsed wall adjoining the route is repaired.

Angmering

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 2149 - Closed for a distance of approximately 960 metres from its junction with Dappers Lane (SU073055) heading east and then south to its junction with Water Lane (SU076048).
• Duration: Closed for 36 months until 30 April 2027.
• Reason: To protect public safety while property development takes place on adjacent land.

Apuldram

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. APU-176 - Closed from junction with Apuldram Lane South to junction with A27 Chichester Bypass, a distance of 858m.
• Duration: Closed until 10 April 2027.
• Reason: To protect public safety while a broken bridge is being repaired.

Arundel

• Affected route: Public Footpath 3064 in Arundel, from its junction with Mill Road eastwards to Arundel Museum.
• Duration: Closed until 31 December 2026.
• Reason: To maintain safety while works to stabilise an adjacent structure are carried out.

Ashurst and West Grinstead

• Affected route: Public Bridleway No. 2370 from its junction with Public Bridleway No. 1864 southwards to its junction with Public Bridleway No. 1871.
• Duration: Closed until 4 of April 2027.
• Reason: To protect public safety due to a broken bridge.

Balcombe

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. BAL-10-1Ba - Closed from London Road to Haywards Heath Road, a distance of 1115m.
• Duration: Closed until 28 February 2027.
• Reason: To protect public safety during works on railway refurbishment.

Barnham and Eastergate

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 325 - Closed from its junction with Lake Lane (SU968046) heading in a southerly direction to its junction with Yapton Road (SU967040) for a distance of approximately 675 metres.
• Duration: Closed until 4 December 2026.
• Reason: To protect public safety following a risk assessment of the operation of a railway crossing on the route.

Barnham and Eastergate

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 323 - from Church Lane, northwards to the railway line.
• Duration: Closed until 30 October 2027.
• Reason: To maintain safety while a property development is constructed on adjacent land.

Bersted

• Affected route: Public Footpath 136/1 in Bersted, from its junction with Chalcraft Lane, northwards to its junction with Public Footpath 134.
• Duration: Closed until 15 May 2027.
• Reason: To protect public safety while works to upgrade the path are carried out.

Billingshurst

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 1325_1 - Closed from its junction with Public Bridleway 771 (TQ071270) heading in a north-easterly direction to its junction with Rowner Road (TQ074272) for a distance of approximately 380 metres.
• Duration: Closed until 11 December 2026.
• Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe bridge.

Bosham

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 230 (part) - Closed from its junction with the A27 (SU804052) heading south to its junction with Public Footpath 2824 24(SU804045), a distance of approximately 810 metres.
• Duration: Closed until 4 April 2027.
• Reason: To protect public safety due to coastal erosion undermining the footpath.

East Dean

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. EAD-447-1 - Closed from Racecourse Road to Hat Hill Road, a distance of 780m.
• Duration: Closed until 2 March 2027.
• Reason: To protect public safety while watermain replacement works take place.

East Grinstead

• Affected route: Public Footpath 44BEG in East Grinstead from a point 180m west of its junction with Imberhorne Lane, westwards for 80m.
• Duration: Closed until 31 December 2026.
• Reason: To protect public safety while allowing works to upgrade the surface of the route.

Elsted and Treyford

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 3355 (part) - Closed from its junction with Footpath 3354 to Redlands Lane, a distance of approximately 770m.
• Duration: Closed until 22 November 2026.
• Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe bridge.

Felpham

• Affected route: Public Footpath 3800 in Felpham from its eastern junction with Public Footpath 3801, eastwards and southwards throughout the remainder of its length.
• Duration: Closed until 23 October 2026.
• Reason: To protect public safety to facilitate the design and installation of a replacement footbridge.

Ferring

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 2113 (part) - Closed from its junction with Langbury Lane to its junction with Onslow Drive over the railway, a distance of approximately 102m.
• Duration: Closed until 13 February 2027.
• Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe rail crossing.

Fishbourne

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 3059 (part) - Closed from its junction with Footpath 555 in the north (GR SU840041) and its junction with Footpath 555 in the south (GR SU839038), a distance of 425m.

• Reason: To protect public safety due to erosion of the sea wall.

• Public Footpath 175: throughout its entire length.
• Public Footpath 200/3: from its junction with Public Footpath 366 eastwards to its junction with Public Footpath 366_1.

• Public Footpath 366 from its junction with Public Footpath 363 northwards to its junction with Ford Lane.

• Affected route: Public Bridleway No. 880, from its junction with Eastfield Lane (SU802197), in an easterly direction to its junction with Sheepwash (SU806196), a distance of approximately 360 metres.

• Reason: To protect public safety due to a bridge being in disrepair.

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 5K (part), from its junction with London Road (TQ302163), in an easterly direction to its junction with Public Footpath No. 11K (TQ309163), a distance of approximately 630 metres.

• Reason: To protect public safety while development works are undertaken.

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 3200 (part) from its junction with Footpath 3625 to its junction with Footpath 2520_1, a distance of approximately 200 metres.

Hurstpierpoint and Sayers Common

• Affected route: Public Bridleway No. HSC/12HU (part) - Closed from Bishopstone Lane to Cuckfield Road, a distance of 450m.
• Duration: Closed until 27 March 2027.
• Reason: To protect public safety while a broken bridge is being repaired.

Littlehampton/Poling

• Affected route: Public Footpath 3096 from its junction with Toddington Lane to its junction with Bridleway 2163, a distance of approximately 1,420 metres.

• Affected route: Affected route: Public Footpath No. 2021 from its junction with Jobson’s Lane (SU932295), generally south-east to its junction with Hookham's Lane (SU940288), a distance of approximately 1.2 kilometres.

• Reason: To protect public safety due to a broken footbridge.

North Horsham

• Affected routes:
  • Public Footpath No 1586, from its southern end at its junction with Barthlomew Way, north-eastwards to its junction with Public Bridleway No. 1585, approximately 841 metres.
  • Public Footpath No 3565, in its entirety from its western end to its eastern end, approximately 27 metres.
• Duration: Closed until 8 December 2026.
• Reason: To protect public safety due to works on the footpaths.

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 1492 - Closed from its junction with Friday Street (TQ185369), running in an easterly direction to its junction with High Street (TQ205373), a distance of approximately 2.3 kilometres.

• Reason: To protect public safety due to a landslip preventing planned resurfacing works.

• Duration: Closed until 4 November 2026.
• Reason: To protect public safety due to a broken footbridge.

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 1889 from its western end at its junction with Public Footpath No. 1888 (515428,125403), eastwards to its junction with Shipley Road (515594,125341), a distance of approximately 175 metres.

• Reason: To protect public safety due to tree felling and site preparation works.

Singleton

• Affected route: Public Footpath No 3013 from its junction with Public Footpath No. 449-2 (486078, 114196), eastwards to its junction with the A286 (487363, 114989), approximately 1.77KM from Church Lane, northwards to the railway line.

• Reason: To protect public safety whilst civil engineering works are undertaken in the vicinity.

Slinfold

• Affected route: Public Footpath No. 1401 - Closed at its north-westerly end its junction with Bridleway 1400 to its junction with Bridleway 1440 at its south-easterly end, a distance of approximately 165 metres.

• Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe bridge. Design works will be undertaken in 2026 to 2027 followed by the installation of a new bridge in 2027 to 2028.
