Six new on-call firefighters have joined West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service after successfully completing their initial two-week training course.
On-call firefighters often have full-time employment elsewhere but respond to emergency calls within their local area.
The new recruits live or work nearby to one of the service’s fire stations and will respond to emergencies either from their place of work or from home.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Area Manager for Service Delivery, Ady Carter, attended the recruits’ final day and presented them with their certificates at Lancing Fire Station on Friday (18 September).
Speaking after the event, he said: “It was a privilege to attend their final day and celebrate the achievements of our newest on-call firefighters.
“Over the past two weeks, they have demonstrated real commitment, resilience and teamwork while completing an intensive training programme. They should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved.
“I am delighted to welcome them to West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, where they will become a vital part of our service and respond to emergencies in their local communities.
Councillor Tracie Bangert, Cabinet Member for Community Support, Fire and Rescue, said: “I would like to congratulate each of our new on-call firefighters on successfully completing their initial training.
“Choosing to serve your community in this way is a remarkable commitment, and these recruits have shown great dedication in taking their first steps into the role.
“Our on-call crews make a significant contribution to keeping residents safe across West Sussex. I wish them every success as they begin their journey with the service.”
The new firefighters, and where they will be based, are:
- Max Williams – Arundel Fire Station
- James Benton – Horsham Fire Station
- Edward Willis – Bognor Fire Station
- Nathan Craig – Shoreham Fire Station
- Bartosz Sobieraj – Bognor Fire Station
- Alexander Trouchkin – Bognor Fire Station
