Consultation has started on proposals for cycling and walking improvements in Felpham, between the B2259, Felpham Way and Wroxham Way.
West Sussex County Council is proposing to upgrade the Felpham Way Footpath to a shared use path for cyclists and pedestrians and to upgrade the existing Pelican Crossing on B2259 Felpham Way to a Toucan Crossing.
The proposals would provide a safe route between the B2259, Felpham Way and Wroxham Way, providing improved access to Felpham Community College and Downview Primary School. The scheme will contribute towards the delivery of a connected cycle link between the South Downs National Park and Bognor Regis and by encouraging more walking and cycling journeys, would help to reduce congestion in the area.
The proposals being put forward include:
- Upgrading the existing Pelican Crossing to a Toucan Crossing, with a new layout to enable cyclists and pedestrians to cross the B2259 in one stage, including a new island with dedicated space with a central refuge for added protection
- Widening of the existing off-road Felpham Way Footpath to accommodate both cyclists and pedestrians
- New signage, fencing and lighting along Felpham Way Footpath
- Improvements at the entrance of Downview Primary School, including additional cycle parking.
As part of our council plan, the West Sussex Transport Plan (WSTP) aims to enable active travel and access to education, employment and services, and decarbonise the transport system while protecting the local environment. This is expected to take place partially through investment in active travel infrastructure across the County, such as this scheme.

The consultation is open until 11:59pm on Monday 10 April 2023.
A drop-in event has been arranged to give people the chance to view the proposals in person and speak to members of the project team. The event will take place on Wednesday 8 March at 4-8pm, at Arun Leisure Centre.
Consultation feedback will be analysed and used to help develop the designs and determine the next steps for the schemes.
