Free library packs help families prepare for school all year round

Parents and carers whose children start next year can get a head start with free resources from West Sussex Libraries

Issue date: 28 October 2026

As children who started school this year settle into school life, parents and carers whose children start next year can get a head start with free resources from West Sussex Libraries.

Families can borrow a free ‘Starting school with West Sussex Libraries’ pack from any of the 36 libraries in West Sussex.

There is a choice of 2 Gruffalo bookbags. Each pack includes books to share with your child, a game and a leaflet with practical tips on either potty training or helping your child settle into school.

Families can also use their library card to borrow other books about these topics and much more, free of charge.

Libraries provide a welcoming place where families can choose books, share stories and spend time together. They also run free weekly activities throughout the year including Rhyme Time and Storytime sessions.

Helping children get ready for school is one of five priorities in the West Sussex Health and Wellbeing Board’s Joint Local Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2025 to 2030. As part of this work West Sussex County Council’s Public Health team funded the packs to help families prepare their children for school.

Councillor Ian Davey, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “Starting school is an important step for children and their families. These free packs give parents and carers practical ideas to use at home, alongside books and activities they can enjoy together to support their child’s development and get ready for the transition to school.”

Councillor Tracie Bangert, Cabinet Member for Community Support, Fire and Rescue, said: “These packs are a great way for families to build their child’s confidence and skills in a relaxed and enjoyable way. Libraries already offer a wide range of books and toys to borrow, as well as free activities, and these new library packs are a welcome addition.”
