Fire service issues water safety warning amid hot weather

The warning comes after the rescue of two people in Bosham.

Release date: 30 July 2024

With more people enjoying the holidays and warm weather, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is warning people to stay safe in the water following the rescue of two people in Bosham.

On Sunday night (28 July) firefighters were called to assist the Maritime & Coastguard Agency with an incident which saw two kayakers stranded on mud flats 50 metres from land, after being caught out by the ebbing tide.

Both agencies worked together and created a rope pulley system to rescue the kayakers, who fortunately did not require any medical assistance.

Neil Harrison, Prevention Manager, said: “It’s natural for people to enjoy the sunshine and head to water to cool down, but you should never underestimate the dangers of the water. It must be respected.

“If you’re planning on doing water-based activities, such as kayaking, paddle boarding or sailing, please ensure you’re wearing suitable clothing – including life jackets.

“Having knowledge of the area you’re in and the tide behaviours is vital too. Water can be unpredictable so it’s important that you do your research before carrying out any activities, to ensure you’re in the safest position possible.”

If you get in trouble in the water, follow the RNLI’s Float to Live guide:

  • Tilt your head back with ears submerged.
  • Try to relax and control your breathing.
  • Use your hands to help you stay afloat.
  • Call for help or swim to safety if you can.

In an emergency call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
