A main route through Haywards Heath could become safer, greener and more welcoming, with local people now being asked to help shape proposals put forward by West Sussex County Council.
The plans for South Road aim to create a more attractive and people‑friendly environment, one that supports the shops and services at the heart of the town centre.
A public consultation is now open, and everyone is encouraged to have their say.
Councillor Joy Dennis, the county council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “South Road is an important part of daily life for many people in Haywards Heath. We want to help make the area feel safer, more comfortable and more welcoming for everybody, whether you’re visiting the shops, travelling to work or simply enjoying the town centre.”
Ideas for improvements include:
- Wider pavements to give people more space and improve safety
- New paving and refreshed surfacing to brighten the street
- Additional planting and new street furniture, including benches and cycle parking
- Removal of some guard railings to improve accessibility
An online survey is open for residents, businesses and visitors to comment on the proposals and help shape the design.
People can also speak with the project team, view the plans and ask questions directly at a public drop‑in session:
- Saturday 7 February, 10am to 3pm
- Haywards Heath United Reformed Church, RH16 4LQ
Haywards Heath town centre was identified as a priority for investment in the West Sussex Transport Plan 2022–2036. A previous scheme covering South Road and Commercial Square was developed in 2022 but was deemed unaffordable.
West Sussex County Council has since revisited and refined the plans to ensure the key priorities can still be delivered. The council is now inviting residents, businesses and visitors to share their views on the updated proposals.
Cllr Dennis continued: “We’d really value your feedback, so please take a few minutes to complete the online survey and tell us what you think.”

The consultation period runs until 2 March 2026.
