How we can help

Careers advice

West Sussex County Council (WSCC) offers careers advice to young people aged 16 to 24 years of age who are not in employment, education or training.

This is a free service and can help if you do not know exactly what job you want to do or you want to know what route you need to take to secure your dream job.

Employability service

We have an employability advisor who can offer care leavers additional support in employability skills for roles in the council.

You can find out about WSCC roles by using information on the pages for finding a job and apprenticeships and volunteering.

Our advisor can help with:

  • your CV and cover letter
  • identifying skills and suitable roles in the county council
  • application form and supporting statement advice
  • interview preparation, including mock interviews

You can chat to our employability advisor about career options where WSCC can offer you a first step. Or if you've identified an opportunity you're interested in, get support with it. Either way, contact us by emailing jobsupport@westsussex.gov.uk.

You can also speak to your personal assistant (PA).

Career Tasters within West Sussex County Council

If you are aged 16 or over, WSCC offer career tasters for you. This is an opportunity to try a job within the council over a period of 12 weeks.

Your PA or social worker can talk to the right people on your behalf to find out what current career taster opportunities are available.

Apprenticeships within WSCC

You may be interested in apprenticeships with WSCC. Talk to your PA or social worker if you would like to learn more about what current opportunities are available within the council.

For more information about apprenticeships, see our Traineeships, apprenticeships and volunteering page.

Guaranteed interviews

WSCC have a guaranteed interview scheme for care leavers, as long as they meet the criteria for the role.

We will ensure you have support to apply and prepare for any interviews with WSCC.

Once you have found a job

Once you've found a job we can help with getting you the essentials to start such as clothes and equipment.

For more information about financial help we can give you when you start a job see our Allowances and assistance for care leavers page.
