Fork and Future
In partnership with UK Harvest, we are hosting cooking courses for 7 pre-selected community groups to fight against food waste, all whilst saving money.
What is Fork and Future?
Fork and Future is a project aiming to help residents to prevent and reduce food waste at home and save money.
In partnership with UKHarvest, we are running a series of 4-session educational cookery courses. The courses bring people together to collect rescued food, prepare healthy meals, and enjoy sharing food socially.
The sessions include sharing knowledge of:
- high nutrition low-cost content of food
- food choices and preparation skills
- food waste reduction skills in the home
- fuel and food economy
- food and financial waste reduction
- myth-busting around best before dates
- how to reheat food safely
Each session will also feature a small version of a Community Food Hub. This will allow residents to access these food rescue services alongside their cooking classes.
Participating groups
A West Sussex Waste composition analysis discovered that around 40% of the contents of an average general waste bin is made up of food, with 27.7% being edible food.
Using data that identified areas of high food waste, UKHarvest have joined with various partners across the county to take part in the sessions.
The Fork and Future partners are:
- Adur - Lancing Parish Council
- Arun - Aldingbourne Country Centre
- Chichester - The Rookery, Selsey
- Horsham - St Johns Church, Broadbridge
- Mid Sussex - The Cherry Tree Centre, Burgess Hill
- Worthing - Syd Youth Annexe, Sussex Road
- Crawley - Freeshop Crawley, Bewbush Community Centre
All Fork and Future courses are now fully booked. However, if the project is successful, we hope to run further courses in the future allowing more people and groups to benefit.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t get involved in food waste prevention from home. Our fun ‘Fight Against Food Waste’ booklet is free to download from the UKHarvest website.
It provides some great hints and tips on how to use up left-overs, smart shopping advice and portion measures.
To help you get started, you can also find some great information and videos on our fight against food waste page.
