WSCC and UKHarvest

In October 2022 the County Council launched a six month pilot project to encourage people to take advantage of surplus food rescue services, which in turn works to reduce the amount of edible food that ends up in people’s household rubbish bins.

Due to the success of the pilot, working with UKHarvest, Biffa and other partnerships and charities, the programme has been extended to include seven community hubs, one in each district and borough running until April 2024:

  • Adur: Southwick
  • Arun: Bognor Regis
  • Chichester: Petworth
  • Crawley: Broadfield
  • Horsham: Storrington
  • Mid Sussex: Haywards Heath
  • Worthing: Worthing

Each district and borough will host a UKHarvest community food hub once a month where, for a suggested small donation, people will be able to pick up a wide selection of surplus foods which would have otherwise ended up as waste from suppliers.

Education sessions will also be held to help people reduce their food waste and save money, for example, by using up leftovers, batch cooking, or using a slow cooker. Keep an eye on our website for more information.

For further waste saving info, tips and recipes visit UKHarvest's Fed and Nourished page.

What is a community food hub?

Help to fight food waste at our community food hub.

Community food hubs are open to all residents, you do not need a referral (that some food banks require) and are designed to help rescue food from suppliers that would otherwise have gone to waste.

Access affordable food, learn low-cost cooking and find support on a range of social issues.

Taking place at locations and times to suit you.

Please bring your own bag.

Suggested donation: £3.50
