What to do with hazardous asbestos waste.

Do not dispose of asbestos at home. Follow the guidelines below to take cement bonded asbestos waste to the nearest recycling centre (RC) that can accept it.

For health and safety reasons, the material must be double wrapped or double bagged in 1000 gauge polythene and sealed with tape. Bags and sheeting can be purchased from a builder's merchant or DIY store.

Due to the potential hazard of the material, employees are not required to assist members of the public depositing asbestos.

    Cement bonded asbestos waste, up to a maximum of 200kg, can only be taken to:

    Phone the centre before you visit to check there is enough space in the container to accept your waste. Contact details are in the links above.

  • Further information

    The only type of asbestos accepted at RCs is cement bonded asbestos, which may be found in items such as garage roofing sheets or down pipes.

    If you have a large amount or different type of asbestos, you will need to arrange for it to be disposed of through a private contractor which may be chargeable.
