Foster carer transitions

Shared Lives helps young people move from foster care into adult life. It gives them support, stability and a sense of belonging. A young person is matched with a Shared Lives carer who can support them for the long term in a family home.

Shared Lives is different from other types of accommodation. It focuses on building strong, lasting relationships. Young people can learn life skills, grow in confidence and become more independent at a pace that suits them.

Shared Lives works especially well for young people leaving care who need ongoing support, advice and encouragement. It helps them take part in everyday family life, so they do not have to face adulthood alone. Instead, they can grow and succeed in a safe, caring home.

Shared Lives can also support young people who want to stay with the same carer after they turn 18, helping to provide continuity of care.
