Information about where you can get low-cost digital devices, data and broadband connection.

  • West Sussex Library Service device gifting project 

    The West Sussex Library Service device gifting project helps adults experiencing digital exclusion by providing access to digital devices and support to develop digital skills.

    The next referral window opened on Monday 17 August and will close on Sunday 30 August 2026.

    What devices are available?

    This round of the project includes:

    • laptops suitable for everyday online activities, such as:
      • accessing services
      • applying for jobs
      • completing forms
      • email
      • learning
    • Samsung Galaxy smartphones

    Devices are limited and applications are prioritised based on need.

    Who can be referred?

    To be eligible, you must:

    • be 18 years old or over
    • live in West Sussex
    • have no access to a suitable digital device
    • be a member of the West Sussex Library Service, or be willing to join

    Access to a smartphone alone would not normally be considered sufficient under the Minimum Digital Living Standard.

    How do I apply?

    You cannot apply directly to the Library Service. Referrals must be made by a professional who supports you, such as:

    • Jobcentre Plus staff
    • Citizens Advice advisers
    • housing support workers
    • social prescribers
    • adult social care staff
    • community and voluntary sector organisations

    If you think you may be eligible, but are unsure who can refer you, contact us at devices@westsussex.gov.uk and we will try to help identify an appropriate organisation.

    What happens if my application is successful?

    If your application is successful, you will:

    • be asked to complete a short digital skills assessment
    • agree to the project's terms of engagement
    • usually collect your device during a session with a digital volunteer, who will help set up the device and provide initial guidance

    The project aims not only to provide a device, but also to help you gain the confidence and skills needed to make the most of digital technology.
