Work experience and working regulations

Rules about children working and gaining work experience.

Children can learn useful skills from working. This might be through work experience or paid jobs.

Work Experience

You can arrange work experience for your child. Before they start, make sure the workplace:

  • is safe for your child, including completing a risk assessment
  • has the right insurance
  • tells you:
    • what your child will do
    • the hours they will work
    • what clothes they need to wear
    • who will look after your child during the placement
    • how they will help and advise your child

We do not recommend work experience unless these things are in place.

Rules about children working

There are laws about when and where children can work. You can find more detail about employing children on our child work permit pages.
