Some home educating parents choose to use tutors or other help for parts of their child’s learning.
Tutors and groups
Tutors and small groups can help your child learn and feel more confident, but they can cost a lot of money. Some parents work together and share a tutor. This can make it cheaper and gives children a chance to learn together.
If you want to use a tutor or group, we recommend:
- getting references from other families
- checking their safety by making sure the tutor or group leader has a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
- being clear about what you want your child to learn and how they should learn it
- ensuring learning happens in a safe place with good supervision
Some families use online schools or part time education to add to their child’s home education. If you choose to do this, your child is still officially home educated. We will need to ensure that the education your provide is suitable. For more information, see how the Elective Home Education (EHE) team work.
Courses for 14 to 16 year olds (school years 10 and 11)
Some 14 to 16 year olds attend college courses for students who are electively home educated. See our courses for home educated 14 to 16 year olds page.
Safety concerns
If you have concerns about the safety of a child, or the behaviour of an adult who works or volunteers with children, see our safeguarding children page.
