Bus lanes and prioritising buses
We’ve upgraded bus lanes and added traffic light priority on key roads across the county. These changes help buses move more freely, cut delays and make public transport a better choice for everyone.
We’re also planning more ways to prioritise buses through our Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). Revenue funding keeps essential services running and supports recovery on key routes after the pandemic.
Capital funding pays for long-term improvements to infrastructure and assets that will benefit passengers for years to come.
Extending bus lanes in Manor Royal, Crawley
What’s been done
We extended the eastbound bus lane to create a dedicated route linking the A23 London Road with the Gatwick Road. This means:
- faster, more reliable bus journeys
- less congestion
- improved infrastructure that lasts longer and costs less to maintain
How it is funded
This project is part of our BSIP, backed by a £12 million grant from the Department for Transport to be used for capital work including infrastructure improvements. Of that grant, £2.67 million funded this final phase of bus lane improvements in Crawley.
Why it matters
This work supports the Crawley Growth Programme to:
- boost local business investment
- create jobs
- make public transport a smarter choice for everyone
Approximately 170,000 bus movements and up to 3.4 million bus journeys annually are anticipated to benefit from the new bus lanes. The new bus lane bypasses traffic, saving an average of 3 minutes of your bus journey times during the busiest times - making journeys faster and more reliable.
Working together
We've partnered with Metrobus, Crawley and Manor Royal Business Improvement District (BID) and Crawley District Council to deliver these improvements.
