Free older persons' bus pass

Apply for, renew or replace a free bus pass for those of state pension age.

1 Overview

Free off-peak bus travel is available for older people with a bus pass.

Also available are free bus passes for disabled people.

Alternatively, we offer a one-year senior railcard or disabled persons' railcard for a third off the cost of rail travel.

2 How to apply for a free bus pass

Complete the application form:

You will need to be able to print and post your application form (with relevant documents) to:

You should receive your pass through the post within 3 weeks of your application being received.

The West Sussex Bus Pass Information Line is local rate and is open between 9.00am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday. Leave a message if calling outside of hours and we will return your call.

You can also visit any West Sussex library for assistance.

3 Do you qualify for a free pass?

You must be:

  • a permanent West Sussex resident
  • of state pension age (for men this is the pensionable age of a woman born on the same day).

4 What you will need to provide when you apply

When applying for a new pass, you will need to provide the following with your application form:

  1. A clear and recent passport photo with a light background.
  2. Proof of address - please attach a copy of one of the following:
    • valid driving licence
    • most recent Council Tax bill
    • utility bill no more than 3 months old
    • bank statement no more than 3 months old
    • proof of pension entitlement
    • NHS medical card.
  3. Proof of age - please attach a copy of one of the following:
    • passport
    • birth certificate
    • marriage certificate
    • valid driving licence
    • proof of pension entitlement
    • NHS medical card.

Do not send original documents.

5 Using your free bus pass

You can travel off-peak on local buses anywhere in England as far and as often as you like:

Passes can additionally be used on:

  • Compass bus 42 on all stops from Alford at 9.13am onwards to Godalming and Guildford
  • Stagecoach bus 66 which leaves Shripney Corner at 9.07am to Bognor Regis.

These concessions are subject to change.

If you are unsure if your pass will be valid on your journey, please check with your bus operator.

You will not be able to use your pass on:

  • services where most seats are reserved, like coaches
  • long distance services with limited stops
  • services that run for less than six weeks, such as special event buses
  • tourist services such as open-top bus tours
  • buses which are replacing trains.

Where you can't use your pass you will have to pay the full normal fare. You may be able to get help if travelling to hospital or healthcare facilities.

6 Renewing or updating your pass

Since 1 April 2011, a new or renewed bus pass is valid for 5 years.

We will automatically renew your pass and post to the address we hold for you, unless you are notified otherwise.

If you have not received your new bus pass by the expiry date on your current pass, please contact us on the phone number below.

If your details such as name or address change you must notify us:

  • Phone: 0845 075 1018 (West Sussex Bus Pass Information Line) -  calls will cost 4 pence per minute, plus your phone company’s access charge.  

7 Replacing a lost, stolen or damaged bus pass

If you have lost your card, or it has been stolen, please contact us on the number below.

Cards that have been stolen will be replaced free of charge if a crime reference number is given, otherwise a charge of £5.00 is made for replacement cards.

If you are requesting a pass to replace a lost, stolen or damaged one, you do not need to include a photo.
