If you plan to carry out works on a highway maintained by West Sussex County Council, including installing barriers or using traffic management, you must book road space before you start work.
If your works involve any excavation, you must apply for a Section 50 licence instead.
Before you submit your application, make sure that:
- the contractor carrying out the work submits the application, not the traffic management company
- you give at least 10 working days' notice for works lasting 10 days or less
- you give at least 3 months' notice for:
- works lasting more than 10 days
- works that require a road closure
- road closures that require a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) or Section 16 application
- you provide evidence of Public Liability Insurance with a minimum cover of £10 million
- you submit a traffic management plan showing:
- the proposed works area
- traffic management signage
- for development-related works, you also provide:
- construction and build plans
- supporting programmes and schedules
- all documentation listed above
All works will be subject to coordination and the road network being free to provide road space.

We will assess your application to make sure the works can take place safely and minimise disruption to the highway network.
If we need more information or changes to your application, we will contact you.
If we approve your application, we will email you a permit reference number. You must clearly display the permit reference number on site throughout the works.
