West Sussex County Council’s Youth Cabinet have set out their ambitions to improve the lives of young people, in a new Manifesto launched this week.
The 2024-2026 Manifesto aims to address critical issues affecting young people in West Sussex through targeted campaigns which will shape the work of the Youth Cabinet over the next year and beyond.
The new Manifesto presents four main campaigns:
- Youth Safety
- Youth Equity
- Mental Health and Well-being
- Environment
Each campaign area contains a number of key aims and plans for action, including raising awareness of issues and working with partners such as local schools, charities, and businesses to make changes.
Chair of the Youth Cabinet, Reema Ahamed said: “I am delighted to share with you our Manifesto for 2024-26 which has been developed by the Youth Cabinet to outline our four key campaigns which focus on addressing key issues affecting young people in West Sussex. These campaigns are where we wish to focus our efforts to make a real difference to young people in West Sussex over the next two years.”
The Youth Cabinet and UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) members are young people aged 11 to 18, elected to represent the views of young people in West Sussex.
UKYP members also represent views nationally, attending an annual debate in the House of Commons in London.
Members attend events informing them about important social and political issues. They gather the views of other young people using online surveys, and campaign for changes by producing films, blogs and other media.
Cllr Jacquie Russell, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Learning and Skills said: “The Youth Cabinet is an important part of West Sussex’s democratic process, providing a voice for young people across the county. Their comprehensive 2024-2026 Manifesto demonstrates a focused approach towards tackling some of the big issues affecting young people locally.
“I look forward to working closely with the Youth Cabinet to support the delivery of their Manifesto campaigns, helping young people in West Sussex achieve their potential.”
