Work on St Paul’s Road crossing in Chichester to start this month

West Sussex County Council will begin work on St Paul’s Road, Chichester, on Monday 13 April 2026, with the project scheduled for completion by Friday 1 May 2026.

The scheme aims to make it easier and safer for people to walk, wheel and cycle along St Paul’s Road, particularly for those travelling to and from nearby schools. The works are being carried out as part of West Sussex County Council’s Local Transport Improvement Programme.

The work includes the installation of tactile paving, resurfacing in several locations, reinstatement of kerb lines, installation of bollards and a refresh of existing road markings once construction is complete. New school warning signs with timed flashing amber lights will also be introduced. In addition, vegetation will be cleared to improve visibility at the crossing areas.

The work is designed to:

  • Make crossing points safer and more accessible for all users, including schoolchildren and those with mobility or visual impairments
  • Improve visibility and sight lines for pedestrians and drivers
  • Enhance the overall walking and wheeling environment along a key local route
  • Encourage more active travel by creating a more comfortable and clearly defined crossing area

To help residents plan ahead, advance warning signs will be placed locally before work begins. Construction on St Paul’s Road will take place between 9.30am and 3pm, Monday to Friday. Working during daytime hours helps minimise overnight disturbance for residents, ensures a safer environment for both the workforce and the public, and supports better quality control during construction activities.

Temporary multi‑way traffic signals will be used at stages throughout the work to ensure it can be delivered safely. No road closures or diversion routes are required, and emergency services will continue to have access at all times.

As with all highway schemes, progress may be affected by poor weather. Any changes to the programme will be communicated as early as possible.

Residents can report issues on the road or footway using the county council’s online reporting tool.
