Residents are being asked for their views on proposed new on-street electric vehicle chargepoints in West Sussex.
The West Sussex Public Chargepoint Network aims to make charging easier for residents who do not have access to a driveway or garage. It is being delivered by West Sussex County Council and is designed to support the move from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric.
The plans would see one dual socket chargepoint installed at each proposed location, allowing two vehicles to charge at the same time. Underground infrastructure would also be put in place so that additional chargepoints can easily be added in the future, as demand increases. This will reduce the need for further disruptive work at the same sites later.
There would be no changes to parking arrangements at this stage. Existing restrictions, such as permit parking, disabled bays and pay and display requirements, would still apply. Any future changes to parking restrictions around electric vehicle bays would be subject to a separate public Traffic Order consultation.
Cllr Erika Woodhurst-Trueman, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “We want to make it easier for residents to charge electric vehicles close to their homes, especially where people do not have off-road parking.
“These proposals are about putting chargepoints in locations that need them now, while also planning ahead for future demand. I encourage residents to take part in the consultation and tell us what they think of the proposed locations.”
Cllr Natasha Davie, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “Reliable public charging is important if we want more people to feel confident about choosing an electric vehicle. If any residents wish to suggest future possible locations for chargepoints we’d love to hear from them.”
The chargepoints are delivered in partnership with Connected Kerb through the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Pilot Programme with support from district and borough councils.
