West Sussex County Council teams shortlisted in prestigious national Social Worker of the Year Awards

Two West Sussex County Council services have been named as finalists in the 2025 Social Worker of the Year Awards, recognising outstanding commitment to the people they support.

The council’s Adults’ Services team and the Children, Young People and Learning Service have both been shortlisted for the Supportive Social Work Employer Award.

Both services have been recognised for their work in recruiting and supporting qualified professionals to help people in West Sussex.

Since 2021, the Adult’s Services team has transformed its workforce by welcoming qualified social workers and occupational therapists from across the globe, enriching cultural diversity, and enhancing the quality of care provided to local residents. A comprehensive induction programme, buddy system, and ongoing professional development have ensured international recruits feel valued, supported, and able to thrive in their new roles.

Councillor Amanda Jupp, Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services, said: “Our Adults’ Services team have worked to build a positive and inclusive community to make sure new colleagues from around the world feel at home here in West Sussex. Their skills, perspectives and cultural insights have brought enormous benefits to our service and to the people we support.

“The success of our international recruitment programme – with many colleagues choosing to stay, progress and recommend us to others – is clear evidence why so many choose West Sussex County Council as their place of work. Being shortlisted for this award is a fitting recognition of their hard work, compassion and commitment.”

The successful overseas recruitment programme led by the Children, Young People and Learning Service has reduced its permanent vacancy rate from 15% to 4% in just three years and decreased  use of agency staff by 80%. This has led to lower caseloads, improved stability and better outcomes for children and families.

Councillor Jacquie Russell, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Learning, said: “The overseas recruitment programme in Children’s Services has been transformative. Not only has it strengthened our workforce, but it has also ensured our children and families in greatest need benefit from consistent, high-quality support.

“I’m incredibly proud of the dedication shown by our staff, both in welcoming new colleagues and in delivering excellent social work every day. I wish staff in the service every success in being shortlisted for this award."

The Social Worker of the Year Awards celebrate the achievements of social workers and teams from across England. This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony in Manchester on Friday 17 October.
