A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “We would urge people to take steps to prevent fires from breaking out in the open. The warning comes after crews attended two recent incidents near Eartham.
“We were first called yesterday afternoon at 4.47pm to a fire in the open at Selhurst Park Road, Eartham.
“Joint Fire Control mobilised one fire engine from Chichester, one fire engine from Bognor, and an off-road vehicle from Petworth to the scene.
“Upon arrival crews found a fire smouldering in a woodland. Firefighters extinguished the fire using a high pressure hose reel, and used a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no further hotspots.
“We were then called to another fire in the open this morning at 10.47am in a similar location.
“Joint Fire Control mobilised one fire engine from Chichester to the scene.
“Upon arrival the crew found three small fires in a woodland. Firefighters used flexi back pack extinguishers to tackle the fire.
“We would urge people to take extra care during the hot weather to prevent wildfires. Please avoid lighting fires in the countryside, ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished, and always put your litter in a bin or take it home with you.”
