Seven retained firefighters complete first Pass Out Parade of 2023

Release date: 3 March 2023

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has welcomed its latest cohort of retained (on-call) firefighters to the service following the first Pass Out Parade of the year.

After taking part in an intensive two-week training course, the group demonstrated their new skills at a Pass Out Parade in front of a proud audience of family, friends and colleagues. The parade was held at Worthing Fire Station on Friday (3 March).

Presenting the new recruits with their certificates was West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Peter Rickard. Speaking of their achievements, he said: “I feel immensely proud of our new retained firefighters for choosing to join their local fire station to protect and serve the communities of West Sussex.

“This role doesn’t just involve fighting fires and rescuing people from road traffic collisions, our firefighters will play a pivotal role in helping prevent emergencies from happening in the first place.

“The county has gained seven amazing firefighters and I wish them all long and prosperous careers.”

The retained firefighters will now go on to serve their local communities by responding to emergencies either from their home or place of work.

The new recruits, and the stations they will be based at, are:

  • Hayden Platt - Bognor Fire Station
  • Steven Willis - Burgess Hill Fire Station
  • Thomas Oakey - Henfield Fire Station
  • Matthew Reynolds - Hurstpierpoint Fire Station
  • Jamie Parton - Steyning Fire Station
  • Thomas Kelly - Storrington Fire Station
  • Ruby Wallis - East Grinstead Fire Station
