The West Sussex Economic Growth Board (WSEGB) has appointed Henry Powell as its new independent Chair, following a successful recruitment process. This marks a significant step for the county's economic leadership as West Sussex prepares to capitalise on new regional opportunities.
The West Sussex Economic Growth Board brings together representatives from business, local authorities and education to provide strategic leadership on key economic issues affecting the county. The Board plays a key role in supporting the delivery of the West Sussex Economic Strategy and ensuring business voices help shape investment and economic development decisions.
The appointment comes at an important time for Sussex, with the creation of the Sussex & Brighton Strategic Authority and the establishment of new regional arrangements for economic leadership. As Chair of the WSEGB, Powell will also sit on the Strategic Authority's Business Advisory Board, helping to ensure West Sussex's priorities are represented at a regional level.
Powell brings more than three decades of experience leading businesses through growth and transformation. As Commercial Director of Sharpak Healthcare and Inpress Precision, businesses he co-acquired in 2011, he has overseen expansion through both acquisition and organic growth while helping strengthen advanced manufacturing and healthcare sectors in Sussex.
Alongside his commercial achievements, Powell has played a prominent role in shaping the region's economic agenda. He served as Chair of the Coastal West Sussex Partnership between 2018 and 2023, working with public and private sector partners to support investment, skills development and business growth across the region.
He is also recognised for his commitment to environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives and community impact. Through a partnership with HM Prison and Probation Service, he has helped support more than 135 offenders into employment, creating new opportunities for individuals to develop skills and build sustainable careers.
