Have your say on walking, wheeling and cycling improvements in Horsham

West Sussex County Council and Horsham District Council are inviting residents to share their views on proposals to respond to long-standing concerns about safety and congestion along Comptons Lane and Bennetts Road, close to The Forest School in Horsham.

Release date: 23 June 2026

Following a consultation in 2022, the councils have listened to residents’ feedback and updated proposals to improve walking, wheeling and cycling in the area. The scheme has been developed to address the limited space for people cycling and challenges faced by pedestrians, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up times and around the busy Bennetts Road/Comptons Lane junction.

The proposals aim to create a safer and more accessible environment for everyone, especially the large number of pupils travelling to and from The Forest School. They also support wider ambitions to encourage healthier travel choices, reduce reliance on cars for short journeys and improve local air quality.

Key proposals include:

  • Three new parallel crossings for pedestrians and cyclists at the Bennetts Road/ Comptons Lane junction, upgrading the existing crossing on Comptons Lane, and at the main school entrance
  • A new Zebra crossing near Highlands Road
  • Improvements to the Bennetts Road/Comptons Lane junction layout
  • Segregated cycle routes and improved access to the school
  • A new 20mph speed limit to create a safer environment
  • Additional cycle parking and raised crossings on nearby side roads

The scheme forms part of the Horsham Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, which identifies priority routes for improvement across the town.

The consultation is open until 11:55pm on Tuesday 4 August 2026, and feedback will help shape the final design and support future funding bids.

Residents can view the proposals and complete the online survey via the website.

A drop‑in event will also be held on Wednesday 8 July 2026, 4pm–7pm The BEC Auditorium, The Forest School, Comptons Lane, Horsham RH13 5NT
