GRIT students celebrate their success at Bognor Fire Station

Release date: 27 November 2025

Eleven young people have successfully completed the latest GRIT course run by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

The course aims to promote personal resilience, improve wellbeing, strengthen relationships, and build healthy communities.

During the course, the pupils aged 11-13 from The Regis and Felpham Community College, took part in a diverse programme of firefighter simulated exercises and activities to support their social and emotional development.

From firefighter drills such as hose running to team-building challenges, first aid training, and communication exercises, the course provided hands-on experiences that encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and emotional growth.

A special pass out parade was held to celebrate the students’ achievements on Friday (21 November) at Bogor Regis Fire Station in front of their proud families.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Andy Piller, attended the event and presented the young people with their certificates.

Speaking after the event, he said: “It was fantastic to meet our latest GRIT students and see first-hand the commitment and enthusiasm they have shown throughout the course.

“They have all worked hard and have demonstrated excellent team working and communication skills. These skills along with the confidence and resilience they have developed during the course will serve them well in life.”

Councillor Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for Community Support, Fire & Rescue, said: “This course is a fantastic example of how our fire and rescue service goes beyond emergency response to make a real difference in the community. By investing in young people, we’re helping to build stronger, safer communities for the future.”
