West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging residents to consider whether they, or someone they know, could be at risk of a fire at home and benefit from a free Safe and Well Visit.
Each year, the service visits around 5,000 homes across West Sussex to help people stay safe and prevent fires. These visits, including any smoke alarms or specialist smoke detection equipment fitted during the visit, are free of charge.
Anyone who is at a higher risk of experiencing a fire in their home, or who may be less able to escape in an emergency, is eligible for a Safe and Well Visit. Factors such as living alone; having a disability or impairment; smoking in the home; living with a health condition that requires the use of medical equipment; and hoarding can all increase the risk of fire.
During a Safe and Well Visit, fire service staff provide practical advice on fire safety, including the importance of working smoke alarms, safe cooking practices, charging electronic devices safely, and planning an escape route in the event of a fire.
The visits also cover wider health and wellbeing issues that can affect a person’s safety at home, including smoking, the use of emollient creams, alcohol consumption, diet and exercise.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Safe and Well Manager Samantha Barber said: “A fire can have a devastating impact on people’s lives, but many fires can be prevented through simple safety measures and advice.
“Our Safe and Well Visits are tailored to the needs of each household and provide valuable guidance to help people stay safe in their homes.
“I would encourage anyone who feels they could benefit, or who has a friend or family member who may be at greater risk, to get in touch to request a free visit.
“We would ask that you have a discussion with the person you are referring beforehand to ensure they are happy for us to come and visit them.”
Residents who feel they, or someone they know, would benefit from a Safe and Well Visit can find out more and request a visit on our website.
