Bedford Street, Bognor Regis - road closure update

Release date: 27 September 2023

Arun District Council Officers have completed an external inspection of a building which was previously occupied by Wilko on Bedford Street, Bognor Regis and have identified potentially significant external structural issues. In the interest of public safety, there is a full closure of the section of Bedford Street including pavements running alongside the length of the building. Traffic signals have been placed at the South end of Bedford Street to allow access where possible.

To ensure public safety we are upgrading the temporary barriers to Herras fencing and are sourcing concrete barriers for extra protection. We are also engaging with the landowners with regards to entering the building for a more thorough investigation and to erect scaffolding to ensure the highway is safe for the public to use.

The issues with the building do not have impact to London Road or adjoining buildings and Morrisons car park will remain open, but pedestrian access from the car park along the current footway to Morrisons is closed.

It is not currently possible to confirm how long the road will be closed while emergency works to make the area safe take place. West Sussex County Council recommends people plan their journey accordingly.
